10,200 Hospitalized. Fireworks related injuries during 4th of July, 2022.

The Fourth of July festivities bring cherished traditions like backyard gatherings and fireworks displays, but they also come with a sobering reminder of safety risks, particularly concerning consumer fireworks.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), fireworks cause thousands of injuries annually, underscoring the importance of caution. Alex Hoehn-Saric, CPSC Chairman, emphasized the dangers, stating, “Fireworks are beautiful to watch, but they can be deadly when mishandled or when they contain illegal components. I urge everyone to handle fireworks with care, use only those labeled for consumer use, and keep children safely away, including from sparklers.”

Injuries from Fireworks

In 2022, approximately 10,200 Americans required hospitalization due to fireworks-related injuries, as reported in the CPSC’s annual study. This marked a significant drop of nearly 35% compared to 2020, a year marked by reduced public displays during the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, about 7,400 injuries, roughly 73% of the total, occurred within a one-month period centered around Independence Day, from June 17 to July 17. The most affected age group during this time span was individuals aged 25 to 44.

Fatalities Caused by Fireworks

From 2007 to 2022, the CPSC documented 162 deaths related to fireworks, averaging 10.1 deaths per year. In 2022 alone, there were 11 reported deaths, with misuse contributing to five of these fatalities.

As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, these statistics serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of handling fireworks responsibly and adhering to safety guidelines. While fireworks add to the holiday’s allure, ensuring safety remains paramount to prevent injuries and tragedies during this festive time.

Fireworks safety tips

The data on injuries strongly recommends that attending public fireworks displays overseen by professional pyrotechnics experts is the safest option for enjoying fireworks.

However, for those opting to purchase consumer fireworks, the CPSC provides straightforward safety guidelines to ensure safe handling:

  • Keep children away from fireworks. Even sparklers can cause a burn risk.
  • Keep a pail of water or a garden hose on hand in case of fire or other mishaps.
  • Light one firework at a time, and move back quickly after ignition. Do not try to relight duds.
  • Do not use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
